School Has Given Me Admission but JAMB CAPS Says “Not Admitted”: What to Do

Make this easier to read

If your school has offered you admission but JAMB CAPS still says “Not Admitted”, your admission is not yet confirmed on CAPS. Check your O’Level results, any pending transfer proposal and whether your school has formally recommended you to JAMB.

The mismatch does not automatically mean your school’s offer is fake or that JAMB has rejected you. It means you need to establish which stage of the admission process is outstanding. JAMB’s official support guidance specifically identifies these checks for candidates shortlisted by an institution whose CAPS status has not updated.

This guide covers undergraduate admissions processed through JAMB CAPS, including UTME and Direct Entry.

Why Your School and JAMB CAPS Can Show Different Admission Statuses

A school’s selection process and JAMB’s final approval are separate stages. Your name appearing on a school list does not, by itself, establish that every CAPS approval step has been completed.

JAMB explains that an admission officer can propose a candidate, the head of the institution can recommend the candidate, and the recommendation can then await JAMB’s approval. A recommendation may still be declined if the candidate does not meet the requirements.

The useful question is therefore: “What is holding up my own admission record?”

What you findYour next step
Your result is missing from JAMB’s recordArrange an upload through an accredited JAMB CBT centre and confirm it appears
There is an unanswered transfer proposalReview the proposed course and respond to it
The school cannot confirm it has recommended youAsk its admission office to check your record
The school confirms submission, but CAPS remains unchangedAsk whether there is an outstanding query, then contact JAMB support if necessary
Your name appears only in an unofficial screenshot or messageVerify the offer through the school’s official portal or admission office

1. Confirm the School’s Offer and Your JAMB Details

Start with the school’s official admission portal, published list or admission letter. Match the offer to your:

  • Full name.
  • JAMB registration number.
  • Course.
  • Academic session.
  • Admission route: UTME or Direct Entry.

If you found your name in a forwarded list, locate the original school publication. A matching name alone is not enough to identify your admission record.

Next, sign in to JAMB e-Facility with your registered email address and password. Open the admission-status service, select the appropriate examination year and access CAPS.

Save a screenshot of the status and note when you checked it. This gives the admission office something specific to investigate.

A blank page, a loading error or a screen displaying only “Welcome” is a portal-access problem. It is different from successfully opening your record and seeing “Not Admitted”.

2. Confirm Your O’Level Results Are on JAMB’s Record

Uploading results to your school’s portal does not establish that they are also on JAMB’s system.

JAMB states in its candidate FAQs that it will not consider an institution’s admission recommendation for a candidate whose result has not been uploaded to its portal. Candidates who registered with awaiting results must upload them when available.

Open the O’Level result section in CAPS and check the examination details, subjects and grades. If you are using two sittings, check both.

If the result is missing or incorrect, visit an accredited JAMB CBT centre with your result details and registration number. After the work is completed, confirm the result on your record rather than relying only on a payment receipt. University admission instructions also explicitly require candidates to confirm that an upload has taken effect in CAPS.

Keep evidence of the corrected record for your follow-up with the school.

3. Check Transfer Approval if the School Offered a Different Course

If you applied for one course but the school selected you for another, open Transfer Approval in CAPS.

Read the proposed programme carefully. If you want it, complete the required response; if you do not, understand the consequences before rejecting it.

This step can matter directly to admission processing. For example, the University of Port Harcourt’s 2026/2027 supplementary admission instructions require successful candidates to accept the proposed departmental transfer on CAPS so their admission can be processed.

Accepting a transfer proposal and accepting a final admission offer are separate actions. After responding to the transfer, continue checking Admission Status.

If the school also directs you to complete a change of course, follow its instructions for your case. Do not pay for repeated changes simply because your status has not updated.

Contact the admission office, registry admission unit or designated JAMB desk officer. Ask them to check your individual record.

JAMB’s troubleshooting guidance specifically tells candidates to establish whether their institution has formally recommended them for final clearance.

You can send this message:

Good day. My name is [full name], JAMB registration number [number]. I was offered admission to [course] for the [session] academic session through your official [portal/list], but my JAMB CAPS still shows “Not Admitted”.

Please confirm whether my admission has been recommended to JAMB and whether any requirement or query is outstanding. I have attached my school admission evidence and current CAPS screenshot. My acceptance or registration deadline is [date, if applicable].

If you are a Direct Entry applicant, also ask whether any qualification-verification requirement remains outstanding.

A specific answer helps you decide the next action. “We have not submitted your recommendation” requires a different follow-up from “JAMB has returned a query on your credentials”.

5. Raise a JAMB Support Ticket if the Issue Remains Unresolved

If the institution confirms that it has submitted your recommendation and the mismatch remains unresolved, use the official JAMB support platform.

The platform provides a ticket service and a way to track your requests.

For a useful complaint, include:

  • Your JAMB registration number and admission year.
  • The institution and programme.
  • Evidence of the school’s offer.
  • Your current CAPS screenshot.
  • The school’s response about your recommendation.
  • Any approaching acceptance or registration deadline.

A clear subject line is: “School admission offer not reflecting on CAPS — [registration number]”.

Keep your ticket reference and follow up through the same record. Do not include your account password or one-time verification codes.

How Long Does It Take for JAMB CAPS to Update?

There is no single waiting period established by the guidance cited here for every school-to-CAPS mismatch. Claims that it must change within 24 hours, 72 hours or seven days should not be treated as a promise.

JAMB allows admissions to be processed in batches or individually. Your next step depends on whether the institution has submitted the recommendation and whether anything remains unresolved.

If the school gives you a specific date for checking again, record it and follow up when that date passes. If a deadline is close, contact the admission office immediately rather than waiting for an assumed processing period.

Should You Pay the Acceptance Fee While CAPS Says “Not Admitted”?

Ask the school for written instructions before the payment deadline. Tell the admission office that you have an institutional offer but no confirmed CAPS offer.

Request answers to three questions:

  1. Should you pay while JAMB approval is pending?
  2. What happens to the payment if the admission is not approved?
  3. Can the school give you more time while it resolves the mismatch?

This avoids choosing between two unsupported assumptions: that paying will make CAPS update, or that you can ignore the school’s payment deadline without consequences.

An acceptance-fee receipt is evidence of payment to the institution. It does not establish that JAMB has approved your admission.

Does “Admission in Progress” Mean the Problem Is Solved?

It indicates that your application is being processed, but it is not the final offer.

JAMB has explained that “Admission in Progress” can cover a proposal awaiting institutional recommendation or a recommendation awaiting the board’s decision. Approval still depends on meeting the requirements.

Continue checking until the approved offer appears. If you want the place, complete the authorised acceptance process, obtain your JAMB admission letter and follow the school’s clearance instructions.

Do You Need JAMB Regularisation?

Do not begin regularisation simply because a current admission offer has not appeared on CAPS.

First establish whether the problem is an outstanding recommendation, result upload, transfer response or another issue identified by the school or JAMB. If your case concerns an older admission or a different admission route, ask JAMB to identify the applicable procedure.

The practical goal is to resolve the specific issue in your record—not to pay for a service whose relevance has not been established.
