There is no portal, no agent, and no shortcut to change a JAMB score that has already been released. The only legitimate way to “upgrade” your JAMB result is to retake the UTME in the next registration cycle. This is what it means — sitting a fresh examination and earning a new score. JAMB results are valid for only one year, meaning you must use your score in the same year you sat for the UTME.
If your 2026 score fell short, your next opportunity is JAMB 2027, with registration expected to open in January 2027. This guide covers exactly what your options are right now, how to register for the retake, and the alternative Direct Entry pathway that lets you skip UTME entirely.

The Hard Truth About JAMB Score Upgrade
Unlike WAEC — where you can re-sit individual subjects as a private candidate — JAMB has no equivalent partial resit system. The UTME is a single, full four-subject examination. If you want a better score, you register fresh the following year and take the whole exam again.
JAMB has issued warnings against fraudsters claiming they can manipulate UTME scores through WhatsApp channels, describing such claims as fraudulent and warning that any candidate involved risks cancellation of registration or withholding of results.
If anyone — an agent, a website, a WhatsApp contact — is promising to change your JAMB score without you retaking the exam, they are running a scam. You will lose your money, and you risk having your registration denylisted. The only path is through an officially registered JAMB CBT centre.
What Are Your Options Right Now (April 2026)?
Your immediate options depend on what your 2026 score actually is. Here is how to think through it:
| Your Situation | Best Option |
|---|---|
| Score is above 150 but below your target school’s cut-off | Change of institution to a school with a lower cut-off |
| Score is above cut-off but wrong course | Change of course within the JAMB portal |
| Score is too low for any university | Prepare and retake JAMB 2027 |
| You have OND, NCE, HND, or A-levels | Apply through Direct Entry (DE) — no UTME needed |
| You want to enter at 200 level | Direct Entry is your fastest route |
Option 1 — Change of Institution or Course (Do This Now If Your Score Qualifies)
If your 2026 UTME score meets the national minimum but falls short of your first-choice school, do not wait. Your best option is to change your institution to one with a lower cut-off via the JAMB portal during the change-of-institution window.
JAMB opens a change of institution and change of course window after results are released. During this period, you can:
- Switch your first-choice institution to one that accepts your score
- Change your course to one with a lower cut-off at your preferred school
- Adjust your programme entirely based on what your score can realistically access
Check the JAMB portal at efacility.jamb.gov.ng for the change window announcement. It is time-limited and typically opens within weeks of results being released.
2026 JAMB Cut-Off Marks
Universities will admit candidates with a minimum score of 150, while colleges of nursing require 140. Polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education, colleges of agriculture, and innovation enterprise institutions will accept a minimum score of 100.
| Institution Type | Minimum JAMB Score |
|---|---|
| Federal and State Universities | 150 |
| Private Universities | 150 |
| Colleges of Nursing | 140 |
| Polytechnics / Monotechnics | 100 |
| Colleges of Education | 100 |
| Colleges of Agriculture | 100 |
These are the national floor scores set by JAMB. Individual institutions set higher internal cut-offs for specific courses. Medicine, Law, and Engineering at top federal universities typically require 240–280+. Always check your specific school’s requirements.
Option 2 — Direct Entry: Skip UTME Entirely
Direct Entry is the most underused option in Nigeria, and it is completely legitimate. The JAMB Direct Entry programme is designed for candidates who possess advanced qualifications such as A-levels, OND, NCE, or their equivalents. It allows candidates to bypass the traditional UTME and gain direct admission into the second year (200 level) of their chosen courses.
Who Qualifies for Direct Entry?
| Qualification | Entry Level |
|---|---|
| A-level results (IJMB, JUPEB, NABTEB, Cambridge) | 200 level |
| National Diploma (ND) — Lower Credit and above | 200 level |
| National Certificate of Education (NCE) | 200 level |
| Higher National Diploma (HND) | 300 level (for some programmes) |
| First Degree from another institution | 200 level or higher |
| Nigeria French Language / Arabic Language Diploma | 200 level |
You still need 5 O’Level credits including English and Mathematics to be eligible for DE. Your O’Level results must be fully available and uploadable on the day you visit the JAMB office — awaiting results are not accepted for DE.

How to Register for JAMB Direct Entry 2026
Step 1 — Generate your Profile Code: Send your NIN by SMS to 55019 or 66019 in this format: NIN 12345678901. Your profile code will be sent back to the same number.
Step 2 — Purchase your e-PIN: Pay the ₦5,700 DE registration fee at any bank, NIPOST, or MMO outlet to receive your e-PIN on the same phone number used for profile creation.
Step 3 — Pre-verify your qualification: Awarding institutions must forward verification to JAMB before processing can be completed. Contact your OND/NCE/A-level institution to ensure they have done this — without it, your application cannot be processed.
Step 4 — Visit your JAMB State or Zonal office: Visit a State or Zonal JAMB office. Present your profile code and e-PIN. Complete biometric capture and photograph physically. Upload your qualification details and required documents. Print your DE registration slip after submission.
Step 5 — Monitor your CAPS profile: After registration, track your admission status through the JAMB CAPS portal at efacility.jamb.gov.ng.
Option 3 — Retake JAMB in 2027 (Full Guide to Prepare Now)
If your 2026 score is too low and you do not qualify for Direct Entry, the most powerful thing you can do is start preparing for JAMB 2027 immediately — not in December 2026. The candidates who score 280+ are not smarter; they simply start earlier and practise more systematically.

How to Register for JAMB UTME (Step by Step)
Step 1 — Get Your NIN Ready: Your NIN is non-negotiable. If you do not have one, visit any NIMC centre near you. Text NIN 12345678901 to 55019 or 66019 to link your NIN to your JAMB profile and receive your profile code.
Step 2 — Purchase Your e-PIN: When registration opens, buy your e-PIN at any approved bank, NIPOST outlet, or accredited JAMB agent. Specify whether you want the UTME with or without the Mock exam at the point of purchase.
Step 3 — Complete Registration at a JAMB CBT Centre: A candidate must personally present their profile code and e-PIN at any JAMB-accredited CBT centre for registration. A candidate’s photograph and biometrics (all ten fingerprints) will be captured at the CBT centre. A registration slip will be printed after successful registration using biometric authentication.
Step 4 — Choose Your Subjects and Institutions: Select your four UTME subjects (Use of English is compulsory for all candidates plus three others relevant to your course). You can list up to four institution choices — two universities, one polytechnic, and one college of education.
Step 5 — Sit the Optional Mock Exam: The Mock UTME for 2026 was extended to four hours, with two consecutive sessions, designed to give candidates ample opportunity to familiarise themselves with the CBT environment. The mock is optional but strongly recommended — candidates who sit the mock consistently perform better in the main exam because they remove CBT anxiety on exam day.
Step 6 — Print Your Exam Slip and Sit the UTME: Print your examination slip from jamb.gov.ng before the exam date. Your slip contains your date, time, and CBT centre. JAMB has warned that candidates without printed slips will not be allowed into examination centres nationwide.
How to Score Higher in JAMB UTME 2027
Candidates who score 280+ are not sitting a different exam from you. They are preparing differently. Here is what the evidence shows works:
1. Start now, not in January 2027
You have 9 months before the next JAMB. Candidates who begin preparation in April–May consistently outperform those who start in November. One hour of focused daily study for 9 months is worth more than six weeks of cramming.
2. Use the official JAMB syllabus
Everything in the exam comes from the JAMB syllabus. Download it from jamb.gov.ng for each of your four subjects. Study what is in the syllabus — nothing else matters.
3. Do past questions daily
JAMB repeats patterns, not always exact questions. Working through 5–10 years of past questions per subject trains your brain to recognise question types and calculate faster under pressure.
4. Practise CBT specifically
The UTME is computer-based. Many students lose marks simply from slow navigation, accidental clicks, or time mismanagement on the interface. Use CBT practice software or apps regularly so the interface becomes second nature.
5. Read the recommended text
The official book to read for the Use of English paper in the 2026 UTME is The Lekki Headmaster by Kabir Alabi Garba. The 2027 recommended text will be announced during registration — read it thoroughly, as comprehension questions from it appear directly in the exam.
6. Focus on your weak subjects early
Most students avoid the subjects they find difficult. That is exactly backwards. Attack your weakest subject first — small gains in your worst subject produce the biggest score improvements.
What Happens to Your 2026 JAMB Result?
Your JAMB result is valid for only one year, meaning you must use it in the same year you sat for the UTME. If you do not gain admission in the 2026/2027 cycle, the score cannot be carried into 2027/2028. You will need to register and sit the exam again.
This is why exploring every admission option for your 2026 score matters before concluding you must retake. Check whether your score qualifies for a different institution, a different course, a polytechnic, or a college of education — exhausting all options in the current cycle is always smarter than waiting an entire year.

Frequently Asked Questions — JAMB Score Upgrade
Can I upgrade my JAMB result without retaking the exam?
No. There is no legal mechanism to modify a JAMB score that has been released. The only pathway is to register fresh and sit the full UTME in the next cycle.
Is there any way to change a specific subject score in JAMB?
No. Unlike WAEC — where you can resit individual subjects as a private candidate — JAMB requires you to retake the entire four-subject UTME. There is no subject-by-subject resit option.
Can I use my 2026 JAMB result in 2027?
No. JAMB results are valid for only one year. You must use your score in the same year you sat for the UTME. For 2027/2028 admission, you must register and sit the 2027 UTME.
Someone is offering to change my JAMB score for a fee — is it real?
JAMB has described such offers as fraudulent and warned that any candidate involved risks cancellation of registration or withholding of results. Do not pay anyone. Report such contacts to JAMB directly.
What is the minimum JAMB score for university admission in 2026?
The minimum score for universities is 150. Colleges of nursing require 140. Polytechnics, colleges of education, and similar institutions accept a minimum of 100. Individual institutions may set higher internal cut-offs.
What if I scored below 150 — am I totally stuck?
No. You have three realistic paths: (1) Apply to a polytechnic or college of education where the minimum is 100; (2) apply for Direct Entry if you hold OND, NCE, or A-level qualifications; or (3) register for JAMB 2027 and prepare more systematically this time.
How is Direct Entry different from UTME?
Direct Entry allows candidates with advanced qualifications such as A-levels, OND, or NCE to bypass the UTME and gain admission directly into 200 level of their chosen programmes. It is not a workaround — it is an official separate admission pathway managed by JAMB.
When will JAMB 2027 registration open?
Based on JAMB’s annual cycle, registration is expected to open in January 2027. Exact dates will be announced on jamb.gov.ng. Set a reminder and check the portal from December 2026.
How many times can I retake JAMB?
There is no official limit on the number of times you can sit the UTME. Many students sit it two, three, or even more times. Each sitting is treated independently.
Final Thoughts
Upgrading your JAMB score comes down to one decision: retake and prepare properly, or find an alternative route. The 2026 UTME is running right now — April 16 to 25. If you are in that exam hall this week, give it everything. If your result falls short, do not despair.
You have real options — a change of institution, the Direct Entry pathway if you are qualified, or a properly prepared retake in 2027. What you do not have is a legitimate shortcut. Anyone promising to change your score for money is a scammer. The path forward is through the official JAMB portal, a registered CBT centre, and focused preparation. Bookmark jamb.gov.ng and start preparing today.
