ATBU offers undergraduate courses including Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Architecture, Accounting, Medicine and Surgery, Nursing Science and Public Health. Admission requires the relevant O’Level credits, the correct UTME subjects and completion of the university’s screening process. Direct Entry applicants also need an accepted qualification relevant to their chosen programme.
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, sets a general requirement of five relevant O’Level credits obtained in no more than two sittings. The subjects and additional qualifications required differ between departments.
Undergraduate Courses Offered at ATBU
The courses below are drawn from ATBU’s published faculty, departmental and programme information. Some departments use broader names than the degree programmes they teach; select the exact course title available for ATBU on JAMB when applying.
Engineering and Engineering Technology
ATBU’s engineering faculty identifies the following undergraduate programme areas:
- Agricultural and Bio-Resource Engineering
- Automobile Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer and Communications Engineering
- Electrical/Electronic Engineering
- Mechanical/Production Engineering
- Mechatronics and Systems Engineering
- Petroleum Engineering
These are engineering programmes. Similarly named Technology Education courses belong to a different admission route and curriculum.
Science and Computing
| Area | Undergraduate courses or options |
|---|---|
| Biochemistry | Biochemistry |
| Biological sciences | Applied Botany, Applied Ecology, Applied Microbiology and Applied Zoology |
| Chemistry | Industrial Chemistry |
| Earth sciences | Applied Geology |
| Mathematical sciences | Mathematics |
| Computing | Computer Science |
| Physics | Applied Physics, with published options including Applied Geophysics, Physics Electronics and Engineering Physics |
ATBU’s departmental pages identify Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry and Applied Geology as Bachelor of Technology programmes. Physics specialisations should be checked against the course options available during application rather than treated automatically as separate JAMB choices.
Agriculture and Agricultural Technology
ATBU’s published academic structure covers:
- Agricultural Economics
- Agricultural Extension
- Animal Production
- Crop Production
- Soil Science
- Fisheries
Where JAMB presents an Agriculture entry rather than a departmental specialisation, use the entry offered for ATBU instead of selecting a similar course at another institution.
Environmental Technology
The university lists the following areas:
- Architecture
- Building
- Environmental Management Technology
- Estate Management and Valuation
- Industrial Design
- Quantity Surveying
- Surveying and Geoinformatics
- Urban and Regional Planning.
Management and Business
ATBU’s published academic information includes Accounting, Banking and Finance, and Management/Information Technology. Its dedicated Accounting programme page identifies the award as B.Sc. Accounting.
Applicants should match the precise management or information-technology course title on JAMB with the university’s current application options, as departmental names and programme titles are not always identical.
Science and Technology Education
| Programme area | Courses and specialisations |
|---|---|
| Science education | Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Computer Science Education, Integrated Science Education, Mathematics Education and Physics Education |
| Library studies | Library and Information Science Education |
| Agricultural education | Agricultural Education |
| Business education | Business Education, with Accounting and Management options |
| Construction education | Construction Technology Education, with Building, Drafting and Wood Technology options |
| Electrical education | Electrical/Electronics Technology Education |
| Mechanical education | Mechanical Technology Education, with Automobile and Production Technology options |
The university describes these as undergraduate education programmes, with the vocational and technology education courses leading to B.Tech awards.
Medicine and Health Sciences
| Course | Award identified by ATBU |
|---|---|
| Medicine and Surgery | MBBS |
| Nursing Science | BNSc |
| Public Health | B.Sc. |
ATBU publishes undergraduate admission requirements for Nursing Science and Public Health. Older course lists that omit them should not be used as the sole basis for choosing a programme. Applicants must still confirm that their intended course is available in the relevant admission exercise.
ATBU UTME Admission Requirements
Applicants seeking admission through UTME must:
- Obtain five O’Level credit passes in subjects relevant to their course, within the permitted number of sittings.
- Take Use of English and the three UTME subjects prescribed for the programme.
- Meet the university’s screening eligibility requirements.
- Complete the screening and credential checks required for their admission session.
ATBU’s general entry rules allow no more than two O’Level sittings, subject to any more specific programme requirement. Five credits in unrelated subjects do not satisfy a course’s entry conditions.
What Is the ATBU Cut-Off Mark for 2026/2027?
The university’s 2026/2027 screening announcement, reproduced by Myschool, invited first-choice UTME applicants who scored 160 and above, alongside Direct Entry applicants.
That figure is the general screening threshold. It should not be presented as a guaranteed admission score or a confirmed departmental cut-off for every course.
O’Level Requirements for Selected ATBU Courses
The following requirements come from ATBU’s faculty and departmental pages.
| Course or area | Published O’Level requirement |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Five relevant credits, including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, in no more than two sittings |
| Nursing Science | English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry, in no more than two sittings |
| Public Health | English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, in no more than two sittings |
| Industrial Chemistry | Five relevant credits; the department specifically requires Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology |
| Technology Education | English Language, Mathematics and three subjects relevant to the chosen education programme |
For Medicine, the College of Medical Sciences specifies five credits covering the core science subjects, English Language and Mathematics. Its published UTME combination is English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
These examples are not a substitute for checking the individual requirements of Architecture, Accounting, Agriculture or another programme. Their subject combinations should not be inferred from the requirements for Engineering or Medicine.
ATBU Direct Entry Requirements
Direct Entry applicants must retain the required O’Level credits and hold a qualification accepted by their intended department. ATBU’s general rules identify relevant A’Level, IJMB, NCE and ND qualifications, with departmental conditions determining eligibility.
Engineering
The engineering faculty specifies A’Level or IJMB passes in Mathematics and Physics. Chemical and Petroleum Engineering also require an A’Level Chemistry pass.
Its published rules allow consideration of relevant ND holders for 200-level entry and relevant HND holders for 300-level entry, with at least Lower Credit and the required O’Level subjects. The qualification must be in the same discipline, and placement remains subject to admission approval.
Nursing Science
The Nursing Science department lists these Direct Entry routes:
- A’Level or approved IJMB qualifications with at least grade C in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics.
- Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife qualifications.
Applicants must also have the five required O’Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Public Health
Public Health applicants may be considered with at least two relevant A’Level passes, or a relevant OND/HND qualification with Upper Credit, alongside the required O’Level credits.
Industrial Chemistry
The department requires at least two relevant A’Level or IJMB passes obtained in one sitting. One must be Chemistry; the other may be Mathematics, Physics or Biology. Applicants must also satisfy the O’Level requirements.
How to Check Your Exact JAMB Subject Combination
Use the JAMB Eligibility Checker before registering or changing course:
- Select UTME or Direct Entry.
- Choose the university institution category and select Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University.
- Select your intended programme.
- Enter your O’Level subjects and grades.
- Enter your UTME subjects or relevant advanced-level qualifications.
- Run the eligibility check and review the result.
This checks the combination for the selected course and institution. It is especially useful where an online course list uses a shortened name or an older programme title.
ATBU Screening Portal
The undergraduate screening portal is screening.atbu.edu.ng.
ATBU instructs applicants to initiate screening-related payments through that portal, which directs them to its payment platform. Follow the instructions displayed for your admission exercise and retain your acknowledgement slip and payment records.
