Ƙa’idojin rubutu: accurate Hausa writing
Read this lesson
What you should be able to do
- Recognise standard Hausa letters.
- Separate orthography from pronunciation notation.
Understand it
Rubutun Boko uses special letters such as ɓ, ɗ and ƙ. They are not decorative versions of b, d and k: they represent different consonants. In ƙofa (door), removing the hook changes the intended spelling.
Ordinary Hausa writing generally does not mark tone or vowel length. A teaching transcription may add these marks to show pronunciation. Do not assume a vowel is short merely because an ordinary printed word has no length mark.
Capital letters start sentences and proper names. Punctuation separates complete ideas and questions. Check word boundaries as well as letters: a sentence can contain individually familiar words but still be wrong if its grammatical pieces are joined carelessly.
Work through an example
Correct the spelling of the word for door: « kofa ».
Explanation: « Ƙofa » at the beginning of a sentence, or « ƙofa » within one. The consonant is ƙ.
Watch out: Replacing every hooked consonant with its plain counterpart can change meaning or create an incorrect spelling.

Question 1
Which letter is required at the start of ƙofa?
Show answer and explanation
Answer A: ƙ
The standard spelling is ƙofa, so the initial letter is ƙ. The hooked letter is not interchangeable with plain k. Writing q or g also changes the required spelling. Preserve the actual Hausa letter when typing, copying or searching for the word.
Question 2
An ordinary Hausa word has no tone marks. What follows?
Show answer and explanation
Answer B: Its pronunciation still has tone
Tone is part of spoken Hausa even when ordinary writing leaves tone marks out. An unmarked vowel does not automatically have low tone, and the absence of a tone mark does not tell you its length. Tone and vowel length are separate features to learn in pronunciation.
