01 Written comprehension

Read for meaning and evidence

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Identify the main message and supporting detail.
  • Use pronouns and connectors to follow a passage.

Understand it

First identify who is involved, what happens and why. A detail answers a narrow question; the main idea connects the whole passage. A suitable title should cover the central message without adding an event that the writer never mentioned.

Pronouns often replace an earlier noun. In « Amina prête son livre à Paul. Il le rapporte lundi », il refers to Paul and le to the book. Follow the gender, number and meaning rather than choosing the nearest noun automatically.

Connectors reveal reasoning: parce que introduces a reason, mais a contrast and donc a consequence. For an inference, combine clues in the text. Do not substitute your general knowledge for the writer’s evidence.

Work through an example

Read: « Il pleut. Mariam prend son parapluie avant de sortir. » Why does Mariam take it?

Explanation: The rain explains her action. « Elle prend son parapluie parce qu’il pleut. » The passage does not say that she cancels her journey.

Watch out: A plausible statement is not necessarily supported by the passage.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

« Le bus est en retard. Donc, Ali attend. » What does donc express?

  1. A cause
  2. A question
  3. A comparison
  4. A consequence
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: A consequence

The bus is late, so Ali waits. Donc means “therefore” or “so” and introduces the consequence of the delay. A cause would explain why something happened; a comparison would relate two things. This sentence is a statement, not a question.

Question 2

« Fatou cherche sa sœur. Elle la trouve au marché. » What does la replace?

  1. Fatou
  2. Le marché
  3. Sa sœur
  4. Cherche
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: Sa sœur

Fatou is looking for her sister and finds her at the market. La replaces sa sœur, a feminine singular direct object. Fatou is the subject, au marché gives the place, and cherche is a verb; none of these is the object replaced by la.

02 Written French

Nouns, articles and adjective agreement

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Choose articles for gender and number.
  • Make adjectives agree with their nouns.

Understand it

French nouns have grammatical gender. Learn a noun with an article: un livre, une table. The definite articles are le, la and les; le and la become l’ before a vowel sound or silent h. Indefinite articles are un, une and des.

An adjective usually agrees with its noun in gender and number. Thus un petit jardin becomes une petite maison and de petites maisons. In standard written French, indefinite des normally becomes de before an adjective placed before a plural noun: des maisons, but de petites maisons. Fixed noun expressions can be exceptions. Some forms change more substantially: beau becomes belle, and vieux becomes vieille.

Partitive articles introduce an unspecified quantity: du pain, de la soupe and de l’eau. After ordinary negation, un, une, des and partitives commonly become de: je mange du pain → je ne mange pas de pain. With être, an indefinite article normally remains: ce n’est pas un livre.

Work through an example

Put « la petite maison » into the plural.

Explanation: « Les petites maisons ». The article changes to les; petite and maison each take the plural s. The adjective remains before this noun.

Watch out: Do not assume that every feminine adjective is formed by adding e to the masculine spelling.

4 practice questions with answers

Question 1

Choose the correct phrase.

  1. Un petite maison
  2. Une petites maison
  3. Une petite maison
  4. Une petit maison

Answer C: Une petite maison

Maison is feminine singular, so the article is une and the adjective is petite.

Question 2

Negate « Je bois du lait » to deny consuming any milk: « Je ne bois pas ___ lait. »

  1. des
  2. le
  3. du
  4. de
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: de

In this ordinary negative sentence, the partitive du changes to de.

Question 3

Complétez : « Ce sont ___ petites maisons. »

  1. de
  2. des
  3. du
  4. de la
Show answer and explanation

Answer A: de

Before a preposed plural adjective, standard written French normally uses de: de petites maisons.

Question 4

Choisissez le groupe correctement accordé.

  1. Des maisons blanc
  2. Des maisons blanches
  3. Des maison blanches
  4. Des maison blanche
Show answer and explanation

Answer B: Des maisons blanches

Maisons is feminine plural, so blanches agrees. Here the adjective follows the noun; des remains.

03 Written French

Subject, object and relative pronouns

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Replace repeated nouns with appropriate pronouns.
  • Distinguish qui from que in relative clauses.

Understand it

Subject pronouns include je, tu, il, elle, nous, vous, ils and elles. Direct object pronouns le, la and les answer who or what directly receives an action: je vois les élèves → je les vois.

Indirect object pronouns lui and leur commonly replace à + a person with verbs such as parler: je parle à Awa → je lui parle. Do not use lui merely because the noun is a person: je vois Awa → je la vois.

A relative pronoun links a description to a noun. Qui is the subject of its relative clause: le garçon qui chante. Que is the direct object: le livre que je lis. In both, identify the grammatical job inside the relative clause.

Work through an example

Replace « les lettres » in « Nous lisons les lettres ».

Explanation: « Nous les lisons. » Les replaces a plural direct object and goes before the conjugated verb.

Watch out: Qui and que are chosen by function, not simply by whether the noun is a person or an object.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

« Voici la fille ___ parle français. »

  1. qui
  2. où
  3. que
  4. dont
Show answer and explanation

Answer A: qui

The girl performs parle, so the relative pronoun is the subject qui.

Question 2

Replace « à mes amis »: « Je parle à mes amis ».

  1. Je leur parle
  2. Je les parle
  3. Je eux parle
  4. Je lui parle
Show answer and explanation

Answer A: Je leur parle

Parler à someone takes an indirect object; plural people are replaced by leur.

04 Written French

Present tense and reflexive verbs

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Conjugate common present-tense verbs.
  • Place reflexive pronouns correctly.

Understand it

Regular -er verbs remove -er and add -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent. With parler: je parle, tu parles, il parle, nous parlons, vous parlez, ils parlent. Several written endings sound alike, so do not rely only on pronunciation.

Frequent irregular verbs need their own patterns. Être gives je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont. Avoir gives j’ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. Aller gives je vais and nous allons.

Reflexive verbs use a pronoun matching the subject: je me lève, tu te lèves, elle se lève, nous nous levons. In a negative sentence the pronoun remains beside the verb: elle ne se lève pas. The present may express a current action or a habit, depending on context.

Work through an example

Conjugate se laver with nous.

Explanation: « Nous nous lavons. » The first nous is the subject; the second is the reflexive pronoun. Laver follows the regular -er pattern.

Watch out: The subject nous does not remove the need for the reflexive pronoun nous.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Choose the correct sentence.

  1. Nous parlent français
  2. Nous parlons français
  3. Nous parlez français

The nous ending for regular -er verbs is -ons.

Question 2

Complete: « Elle ___ lève tôt. »

  1. se
  2. me
  3. te
  4. nous
Show answer and explanation

Answer A: se

Elle requires the third-person reflexive pronoun se.

05 Written French

Past events and past background

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Choose passé composé or imparfait from context.
  • Form common past participles and agreements.

Understand it

The passé composé presents a completed past event. It combines a present auxiliary with a past participle: j’ai travaillé, nous avons fini. With many common movement verbs and reflexive constructions, the auxiliary is être: elle est arrivée.

The imparfait describes background, ongoing situations and repeated past actions. Form it from the present nous stem with -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient: nous parlons → je parlais. Être has the stem ét-: j’étais.

The two tenses can work together: il pleuvait quand le bus est arrivé. The rain provides background; the arrival is the event. With être, the participle normally agrees with the subject: elles sont arrivées. With avoir, a preceding direct object can trigger agreement: les lettres que j’ai écrites.

Reflexive verbs need an extra agreement check. In elle s’est lavée, se is the preceding direct object, so lavée agrees. In elle s’est lavé les mains, les mains is the direct object and follows the verb; se means to herself, so lavé does not agree with the subject. Using être is not enough to settle every reflexive agreement.

Work through an example

Choose the tenses: « Quand j’étais enfant, je ___ souvent chez ma tante. » (aller)

Explanation: « J’allais souvent chez ma tante. » The sentence describes a repeated childhood habit, so the imparfait fits.

Watch out: A word such as hier does not automatically force passé composé; the meaning of the action matters.

4 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Complete: « Elles sont ___ ce matin. » (arriver)

  1. arrivés
  2. arrivée
  3. arrivé
  4. arrivées
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: arrivées

Elles is feminine plural, so the participle with être is arrivées.

Question 2

Which tense best supplies the background in « Il ___ quand elle est sortie »? (pleuvoir)

  1. pleuve
  2. pleuvait
  3. pleuvoir
  4. pleuvra
Show answer and explanation

Answer B: pleuvait

Pleuvait presents the rain as an ongoing background situation.

Question 3

Complétez : « Elle s’est ___ les mains. »

  1. lavées
  2. lavée
  3. lavé
  4. lavés
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: lavé

Les mains is the following direct object. Se is indirect here, so the participle remains lavé.

Question 4

Complétez : « Elle s’est ___ avant de sortir. » (se laver)

  1. lavé
  2. lavées
  3. lavés
  4. lavée
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: lavée

Here se is the preceding direct object referring to elle. The participle agrees: lavée.

06 Written French

Future, conditions and the subjunctive

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Form a near future and a simple condition.
  • Recognise a common subjunctive trigger.

Understand it

The near future uses aller in the present plus an infinitive: je vais réviser. The simple future usually takes the infinitive stem plus -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont: nous parlerons. For many -re verbs, drop the final e before adding the future ending: prendre → je prendrai. Some stems are irregular, such as ir- for aller and ser- for être.

An open condition can use si + present followed by a future: si tu travailles, tu progresseras. A hypothetical present condition uses si + imparfait with a conditional result: si j’avais le temps, je lirais. The conditional combines the future stem with imparfait endings.

The subjunctive appears after several expressions of necessity, wish or doubt. « Il faut que tu finisses » expresses necessity; the subordinate verb is subjunctive. Do not treat every que as a trigger: « Je sais qu’il vient » uses the indicative.

Work through an example

Complete: « Si nous avons le temps, nous ___ le musée. » (visiter)

Explanation: « Nous visiterons le musée. » The si clause uses present tense; the result is future. Do not write si nous aurons here.

Watch out: Avoid putting the future tense in an ordinary si condition referring to the future.

4 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Choose the near future.

  1. Je vais lire
  2. J’ai lire
  3. Je lisais
  4. Je suis lire

Answer A: Je vais lire

Present aller + infinitive forms the near future.

Question 2

Complete: « Il faut que tu ___ prêt. »

  1. seras
  2. sois
  3. étais
  4. es
Show answer and explanation

Answer B: sois

Il faut que triggers the subjunctive; the tu form of être is sois.

Question 3

Complétez au futur simple : « Demain, nous ___ le train. » (prendre)

  1. prendrait
  2. prenderons
  3. prendrons
  4. prenions
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: prendrons

Drop the final e of prendre and add -ons to prendr-: nous prendrons.

Question 4

Complétez : « Si j’avais assez d’argent, j’___ ce livre. »

  1. ai acheté
  2. achèterais
  3. achèterai
  4. achète
Show answer and explanation

Answer B: achèterais

Si + imparfait sets up a hypothetical condition; the result uses the conditional achèterais.

07 Written French

Questions, negatives and passive voice

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Transform statements into questions and negatives.
  • Recognise a passive construction.

Understand it

A yes/no question may use est-ce que: est-ce que tu comprends ? In formal writing, inversion is another option: comprends-tu ? Question words ask for particular information: où for place, quand for time, pourquoi for reason and comment for manner.

In ordinary written negation, ne precedes the conjugated verb and pas follows it: je ne comprends pas. With compound tenses, the negative surrounds the auxiliary: je n’ai pas compris. Ne…plus means no longer; ne…jamais means never; ne…rien means nothing.

In a passive sentence, the receiver of the action becomes the subject. « Le gardien ferme la porte » becomes « La porte est fermée par le gardien ». Être carries the tense and the participle agrees with the new subject.

Work through an example

Negate « Elle a fini ».

Explanation: « Elle n’a pas fini. » The auxiliary a, not the participle fini, is surrounded by n’…pas.

Watch out: Ne…que expresses restriction (only), not a complete negative.

Question 1

Which asks for a place?

  1. Quand ?
  2. Où ?
  3. Pourquoi ?

  1. La lettre est écrite par Awa
  2. Awa écrit la lettre
  3. Awa va écrire
  4. Awa veut écrire
Show answer and explanation

Answer A: La lettre est écrite par Awa

La lettre receives the action; être + écrite forms the passive.

09 Vocabulary and communication

Meaning, false friends and polite expressions

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Interpret words within context.
  • Choose expressions appropriate to a situation.

Understand it

A familiar-looking word may have a different meaning from English. Une librairie is a bookshop; une bibliothèque is a library. Actuellement means currently, while éventuellement can mean possibly. Check the full sentence before translating.

Synonyms overlap in meaning but do not always fit the same construction or level of formality. An antonym reverses a relevant meaning: ouvrir contrasts with fermer. A word may be literal in one sentence and figurative in another.

A speech act performs a social purpose. « Pourriez-vous m’aider ? » politely asks for help. « Je suis désolé » expresses regret or apology. An idiom such as avoir une faim de loup means to be very hungry; its effect would be lost in a word-for-word translation.

Work through an example

Translate « Je cherche une librairie ».

Explanation: « I am looking for a bookshop. » Librairie does not mean library.

Watch out: A correct dictionary meaning can still be wrong for the context or the speaker’s intention.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Which word means library?

  1. Mairie
  2. Bibliothèque
  3. Librairie

  3. refusal
  4. polite request
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: polite request

The conditional pourriez-vous and s’il vous plaît make a polite request.

10 French sounds

French sound contrasts and liaison

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Separate written letters from spoken sounds.
  • Recognise basic liaison and vowel contrasts.

Understand it

The letters u and ou represent different vowels in words such as tu and tout. Both involve rounded lips, but the tongue is farther forward for u /y/ than for ou /u/. Reading both like English “oo” loses the contrast.

Several letters can represent one sound: eau normally gives /o/. A final written consonant is often silent, though there are exceptions. Therefore, count spoken syllables by pronunciation, not by the number of letters.

Liaison links a normally silent final consonant to a following vowel sound in certain grammatical groups. Les amis is pronounced with a linking /z/. Liaison is not permission to pronounce every final consonant; some contexts require it and others forbid it. Audio practice is needed to build reliable listening skills.

Work through an example

In « les amis », which consonant sound links the words?

Explanation: A /z/ sound links les to amis. The written s is not pronounced as /s/ in this liaison.

Watch out: Do not claim mastery of listening discrimination from text-only exercises.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Which spelling normally represents /o/?

  1. ou
  2. eau
  3. u

Question 2

What is the linking sound in « des enfants »?

  1. /k/
  2. /s/
  3. /z/
  4. /t/
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: /z/

The final s in des gives /z/ in this liaison before a vowel.

11 Culture and civilisation

Communicate and compare cultures carefully

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Use appropriate forms of address.
  • Compare cultural information without stereotypes.

Understand it

Tu usually addresses one familiar person; vous can address several people or one person politely. A student asking an unfamiliar adult for assistance would normally choose vous. Context and relationships matter more than a rigid age rule.

A cultural comparison should identify the particular country, community and institution. Francophone does not mean that everybody speaks only French or shares one culture. France and French-speaking West African countries differ internally as well as from one another.

When studying schools, festivals, food or government, separate stable vocabulary from facts that change. École, collège, lycée and université are useful educational words, but their exact organisation must be checked for the country being discussed. Avoid applying a French institutional rule automatically to Senegal or Benin.

Work through an example

Choose a polite opening when asking an unfamiliar adult for directions.

Explanation: « Bonjour, pourriez-vous m’indiquer le chemin, s’il vous plaît ? » The greeting and vous suit a polite request.

Watch out: A language shared by countries does not imply identical institutions or customs.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Which pronoun normally suits one unfamiliar adult in a polite request?

  1. Vous
  2. Ils
  3. Nous
  4. Tu
Show answer and explanation

Answer A: Vous

Vous can politely address a single person as well as a group.

Question 2

Which is the strongest basis for comparing two education systems?

  1. A guessed translation of school names
  2. Assuming all French speakers share one system
  3. A current official description for each country
  4. A film scene alone
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: A current official description for each country

Comparable current sources reduce unsupported generalisation.

12 Reading and application

À la bibliothèque : details, pronouns and inference

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Identify details and the sequence of events in the passage.
  • Use textual evidence to distinguish a supported inference from an invented detail.

Understand it

Texte original : Le samedi, Mariam va à la bibliothèque avec son frère. Elle veut emprunter un livre de sciences, mais tous les exemplaires sont déjà prêtés. La bibliothécaire lui propose de réserver le livre. Mariam accepte et choisit un roman pour le week-end. Son frère, qui prépare un exposé, reste une heure pour consulter un dictionnaire. Ils rentrent ensemble avant midi.

Follow the change in Mariam’s plan: she wants a science book, finds none available, reserves it and chooses a novel. The contrast introduced by mais explains the change. Reserving the science book does not mean she already has it.

Lui refers to Mariam in the librarian’s offer. Le livre refers to the science book being reserved. Son frère names a different person, who stays to consult a dictionary. Before answering, identify which action belongs to which person.

The passage states Saturday, one hour for the brother’s consultation and a return before midday. It gives neither the library’s opening time nor the science book’s return date. Do not turn a reservation into a promised collection date.

Work through an example

Pourquoi Mariam choisit-elle un roman ?

Explanation: Le livre de sciences n’est pas disponible. Elle le réserve et prend un roman pour le week-end. The reason is supported by the change described after mais.

Watch out: Use the supplied passage as evidence. A plausible detail is not necessarily a stated fact.
