Writing the UTME is only the beginning. What you do in the weeks after your exam determines whether you actually get admitted. Most candidates who lose their admission in Nigeria do not lose it because of a low score — they lose it because they missed a step, waited too long on CAPS, or did not apply for Post-UTME in time. This guide walks you through every stage, from result checking to printing your admission letter.

Key Highlights
- After your UTME result is out, the next step is checking your admission status on the JAMB CAPS portal at https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng
- The official JAMB cut-off mark for universities in 2026 is 150, polytechnics is 100, and colleges of education is 100
- Post-UTME screening across Nigerian institutions runs between May and September 2026
- Admission processes run between September and December 2026, with institutions releasing lists in batches
- Once you accept an admission offer on CAPS, your admission quest is over — you will no longer be available for consideration at other institutions
- Candidates have 4 weeks to accept an admission offer once it appears on CAPS
Step 1 — Check Your JAMB 2026 Result
Your result will be available on the JAMB portal shortly after you write your exam. There are two ways to check it.
Via the portal:
- Visit https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng
- Log in with your registered email and password
- Your result will be displayed on your dashboard
Via SMS:
- Type UTMERESULT (in capital letters) and send to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number linked to your JAMB registration
- Wait for JAMB’s reply — it will show your total score and subject breakdown
- This SMS service costs ₦50, so ensure you have enough credit before sending
Print your result slip from the portal and keep it safe. You will need it at multiple points during the admission process.
Step 2 — Understand What Your Score Means
Before you take any further action, you need to know where your score places you.
Official JAMB Cut-Off Marks for 2026
| Institution Type | Minimum Cut-Off Mark |
|---|---|
| Universities | 150 |
| Polytechnics | 100 |
| Colleges of Education | 100 |
| Colleges of Nursing | 140 |
Note that the minimum cut-off mark for universities is 150. However, some universities may have higher cut-off marks for certain competitive courses.
Meeting the cut-off does not guarantee admission. Cut-off marks only make you eligible. Admission depends on competition, departmental cut-off marks, and screening performance.
For highly competitive courses such as Medicine, Law, Engineering, Nursing, and Pharmacy, the required score is significantly higher because many candidates apply for these programmes and institutions have a limited number of spaces available each year.
As a general rule, aim for at least 20 to 50 points above the published minimum to stay competitive. Factors beyond JAMB score — including Post-UTME performance, O-Level results, and catchment area — all influence the final admission decision.
Step 3 — Buy Your Post-UTME Form and Prepare for Screening
This is the step most candidates underestimate and many miss entirely.
Following the release of UTME results, tertiary institutions across the country will commence their Post-UTME screening processes between May and September 2026. Candidates are required to purchase screening forms from their chosen institutions and upload the necessary documents.
Each university, polytechnic, or college sets its own Post-UTME requirements and dates. Here is what you must do:
- Monitor the official website and social media pages of every institution you applied to
- Purchase your Post-UTME form as soon as it is available — forms often sell out or close earlier than expected
- Prepare thoroughly for the Post-UTME. Universities typically combine UTME scores and Post-UTME results using specific formulas, usually weighing JAMB at 40 to 50 percent and Post-UTME at 50 to 60 percent of the total aggregate score
- Upload any required documents — O-Level results, passport photographs, and other credentials — before the stated deadlines
Do not assume that a high UTME score alone will secure your admission. Your Post-UTME performance matters equally, sometimes more.
Step 4 — Upload Your O-Level Result on the JAMB Portal
If you registered for JAMB with awaiting results, this step is now urgent.
To upload your O-Level results, log in to your JAMB eFacility account, navigate to “Upload O-Level Results” on your dashboard, carefully input your subjects and corresponding grades, and click Submit. Ensure that the details entered match exactly with your official O-Level certificate to avoid discrepancies.
Admission cannot be processed for candidates whose O-Level status shows “Awaiting Result.” If your result is now out and you have not uploaded it, visit any nearby accredited JAMB CBT centre immediately.
Step 5 — Monitor JAMB CAPS for Your Admission Offer
JAMB developed the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to automate the admissions process into tertiary institutions. It streamlines admissions, eliminates multiple admissions, and empowers candidates with information on available choices.
JAMB has confirmed that all admission processes for 2026 will be conducted through CAPS, which serves as the official platform for admission management.
Check CAPS regularly. Some schools may not publish the list of admitted candidates on their own portal or notice board. For candidates who applied to such schools, the only way to know when they have been offered admission is to check their status on JAMB CAPS.
What Your CAPS Status Means
| Status | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Admission Offered | Your school and JAMB have approved your admission | Accept or reject immediately |
| Admission in Progress (AIP) | Your school has submitted your name to JAMB for final approval | Keep checking — do not pay anyone to speed this up |
| Not Yet Admitted | You have not received an offer yet | Keep checking, upload O-Level result if not done |
Step 6 — Accept or Reject Your Admission on CAPS
Once you see “Admission Offered” on your dashboard, act immediately. Candidates have 4 weeks to accept their admission offer. Those without access to their registered phone numbers must visit a JAMB-accredited centre to accept or reject.
How to Accept Admission on CAPS (Step by Step)
Step 1: Visit https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng and log in with your email and password.
Step 2: Click on “Check Admission Status.”
Step 3: Select “Access CAPS” to open your JAMB CAPS dashboard. On the left panel, select “Admission Status” to view your current offer.
Step 4: On your CAPS dashboard, you will see a notification indicating your admission offer with an option to either Accept or Reject. Click Accept Admission.
Step 5: Confirm your decision when prompted.
Step 6: Print your admission letter immediately after accepting. You will need it for clearance and registration at your institution.
Note for phone users: The JAMB CAPS portal is not fully mobile-friendly. Use the Chrome browser on your phone and select “Desktop site” from the Chrome menu to see the complete page.
Via SMS: Send ACCEPT or REJECT to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number used during JAMB registration. Wait a few minutes, then check your portal again to confirm your choice has been recorded.
Critical warning: Once you accept the admission, you will no longer be available for other schools’ admission consideration. If you reject the admission, you become available to other institutions with open admission slots. Think carefully before you act.
Step 7 — What to Do If You Are Offered a Different Course
Some institutions offer admission into a course different from what you originally applied for. This is called a course transfer.
To respond, access the “Transfer Approval” section within the CAPS portal. Details of the new course will be displayed for your consideration. You can accept or reject the transfer. If you accept, your first-choice institution will be able to admit you to the new programme. If you reject, you will remain in your preferred course and continue waiting for an offer.
Step 8 — Print Your JAMB Admission Letter
Once you have accepted your admission, log in to the JAMB portal and print your JAMB Admission Letter. That document is very important — you will need it for your school’s clearance, registration, and sometimes for hostel application or verification. Keep both soft and hard copies in safe places.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my JAMB 2026 result?
Visit https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng and log in to your dashboard, or send UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019 via SMS using your registered phone number. The SMS service costs ₦50.
What score do I need to get into a university in 2026?
The official JAMB cut-off mark for universities is 150. However, individual universities can and do set higher thresholds for specific courses, particularly competitive ones like Medicine, Law, and Engineering. Always check the specific cut-off for your course and institution.
Can I apply for Post-UTME at more than one school?
Yes. You can apply for Post-UTME at multiple institutions if they are among your JAMB choices. However, once you accept an admission offer on CAPS, you are committed to that institution and course.
What happens if I do not accept my CAPS offer within 4 weeks?
Candidates who do not act within 4 weeks of receiving an admission offer risk losing it. If you do not have access to your registered phone number, visit a JAMB-accredited centre immediately to complete the acceptance process in person.
What if CAPS shows “Not Yet Admitted” even after Post-UTME?
Keep checking regularly. Admissions are released in batches throughout September to December 2026. First confirm that your O-Level result has been uploaded on the JAMB portal, as failure to upload it can affect your admission status. If it has not been uploaded, visit any nearby accredited JAMB CBT centre to do so.
Is NELFUND available for 2026 admitted students?
Yes. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) offers student loans for candidates admitted into accredited federal and state institutions. Once you have your admission letter, visit nelfund.gov.ng to check eligibility and apply. This is one of the most underused resources available to Nigerian students today.
