01 Comprehension

فهم المقروء: read for evidence

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Identify stated details and a main idea.
  • Follow pronouns and logical connections.

Understand it

Read the passage once for its overall meaning before inspecting individual words. Identify the people, actions, places and time expressions. A main idea covers the passage; a detail answers a narrower question.

Original practice passage: « ذهبت فاطمة إلى المكتبة صباحًا. قرأت كتابًا عن الزراعة ثم عادت إلى البيت. » Fatima went to the library in the morning, read a book about agriculture and then returned home. ثم marks the sequence.

An answer must match the passage. Here, المكتبة is the destination, صباحًا supplies the time and الزراعة gives the book’s subject. The passage does not state how much the book cost or whether Fatima borrowed it.

Work through an example

From the passage, answer « عن أي موضوع قرأت فاطمة؟ »

Explanation: « قرأت عن الزراعة. » Agriculture is the stated subject of the book.

Watch out: Do not add an unstated event when choosing the main idea or answering a detail question.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Read: « ذهبت فاطمة إلى المكتبة صباحًا. قرأت كتابًا عن الزراعة ثم عادت إلى البيت. » في النص: متى ذهبت فاطمة إلى المكتبة؟

  1. مساءً
  2. صباحًا
  3. بعد أسبوع
  4. ليلًا
Show answer and explanation

Answer B: صباحًا

The time expression صباحًا means “in the morning” and appears directly in the passage. مساءً means “in the evening”, ليلًا means “at night”, and بعد أسبوع means “after a week”; none is the stated time of her visit.

Question 2

Read: « ذهبت فاطمة إلى المكتبة صباحًا. قرأت كتابًا عن الزراعة ثم عادت إلى البيت. » What does ثم primarily express in the passage?

  1. A question
  2. A negative
  3. A following event
  4. Possession
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: A following event

ثم connects two events in sequence: Fatima read a book, then returned home. Here it introduces the following event. It does not turn the sentence into a question, show ownership or make the statement negative.

02 Grammar

الأسماء: gender, definiteness and number

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Recognise gender and definiteness.
  • Distinguish singular, dual and plural forms.

Understand it

A noun can name a person, thing or idea. The article الـ commonly makes a noun definite: كتاب is a book; الكتاب is the book. Feminine nouns often end in ة, as in طالبة, but this is a common marker rather than a rule covering every feminine noun.

Arabic distinguishes singular, dual and plural. The dual refers to exactly two: كتابانِ in the nominative and كتابَيْنِ in the accusative or genitive. The grammatical job determines which ending is needed.

A sound masculine plural commonly uses ـونَ in the nominative and ـينَ in the accusative/genitive: معلّمونَ and معلّمينَ. A sound feminine plural uses ـات, as in معلّمات. A broken plural changes the internal pattern, as كتاب → كتب. Learn the plural with the noun.

Work through an example

Choose a form meaning exactly two books in the nominative.

Explanation: « كتابانِ ». One book is كتاب; books in a broken plural are كتب.

Watch out: Not every plural can be formed by adding ـون or ـات.

  4. كتابات
Show answer and explanation

Answer B: كتب

كتب changes the internal pattern and means books.

03 Grammar

الضمائر وأسماء الإشارة

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Use independent and attached pronouns.
  • Choose basic demonstrative and relative forms.

Understand it

An independent pronoun can stand separately: أنا (I), نحن (we), هو (he) and هي (she). An attached pronoun joins another word. In كتابه, ـه means his; in كتابها, ـها means her.

Demonstratives agree with the noun they point to. هذا طالب means this is a male student; هذه طالبة means this is a female student. Do not choose a demonstrative only by the English word this, which does not show the same gender distinction.

Relative forms link a noun to a description. الذي is masculine singular and التي feminine singular: الطالبة التي تقرأ, the female student who is reading. Interrogatives have a different job: من asks who, أين asks where and متى asks when.

Work through an example

Translate « her book ».

Explanation: « كتابها ». The attached pronoun ـها expresses possession by a female person.

Watch out: An attached pronoun’s meaning depends on what it is attached to; it does not always express possession.

04 Grammar

الإضافة والنعت والجملة الاسمية

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Separate possession from adjective description.
  • Identify a subject and predicate.

Understand it

An iḍāfa construct relates two nouns, often expressing possession: كتابُ الطالبِ, the student’s book. The second noun is genitive. The first noun does not take الـ or nunation in this basic construct; its definiteness is determined through the following noun.

An adjective describes its noun and usually follows it. In الكتابُ الجديدُ, both noun and adjective are definite, masculine singular and nominative. Compare كتابُ الطالبِ (the student’s book) with الكتابُ الجديدُ (the new book): the relationships differ.

A simple nominal sentence can have a subject and predicate without a present-tense word corresponding to English is. « الطالبُ مجتهدٌ » means the student is diligent. The definite subject names the topic and the predicate supplies information about it.

Work through an example

Distinguish « كتابُ الطالبِ » from « الكتابُ الجديدُ ».

Explanation: The first is a construct phrase expressing a relationship to the student. The second is a noun modified by an agreeing adjective, new.

Watch out: Do not make the first word of a basic iḍāfa definite by adding الـ.

Answer C: كتابُ الطالبِ

كتابُ الطالبِ is an iḍāfa: the first noun has no tanwin, and الطالب is genitive. Use the stated noun الطالب rather than changing it to الطالبة.

05 Grammar

الأفعال: completed, present and command

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Recognise common past and imperfect forms.
  • Form a basic command from a sound verb.

Understand it

The perfect commonly presents a completed action: كتبَ means he wrote. Person and number can be shown by suffixes, as in كتبتُ (I wrote) and كتبنا (we wrote). Read the vowel or context carefully because unvowelled forms may look alike.

The imperfect uses prefixes and sometimes suffixes: أكتبُ (I write), يكتبُ (he writes), تكتبُ (she writes or you masculine singular write, depending on context). It can express present or habitual activity; سـ or سوف can mark a future reading.

An imperative gives a command to the addressee: اكتبْ means write! to one male addressee. Its form is not made by leaving a third-person imperfect unchanged. A command’s exact form depends on the verb and the person addressed.

Work through an example

Translate « I wrote ».

Explanation: « كتبتُ ». The final ـتُ identifies the first-person singular in the perfect.

Watch out: Do not assume every تـ imperfect form means she; it can also mean you in another context.

2 practice questions with answers

06 Grammar

حروف الجر والنصب والجزم

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Apply a common preposition and its case.
  • Distinguish indicative, subjunctive and jussive forms.

Understand it

Prepositions such as في (in), من (from), إلى (to) and على (on) govern a following noun in the genitive: في البيتِ. For a regular singular noun, kasra commonly marks that case; special noun classes may use other endings.

A sound imperfect verb such as يكتبُ is indicative without a subjunctive or jussive governor. After لن, it becomes subjunctive: لن يكتبَ, he will not write. After لم, it becomes jussive: لم يكتبْ, he did not write.

The written form of the verb and its time meaning must both be checked. Although لم is followed by an imperfect form, the expression denies a past action. لا used to prohibit an action also takes a jussive: لا تكتبْ, do not write!

Work through an example

Complete « لم يكتبـ… » with the appropriate final vowel on a sound verb.

Explanation: « لم يكتبْ ». لم requires the jussive; this sound verb shows it with sukūn.

Watch out: Do not translate لم + imperfect as an ordinary present action merely because the verb has an imperfect form.

07 Grammar

كان وإنّ: changes in a nominal sentence

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Identify the effects of كان and إنّ.
  • Distinguish their noun and predicate case patterns.

Understand it

Begin with « الطالبُ مجتهدٌ »: the student is diligent. Both main nouns are nominative in this basic nominal sentence. Adding a modifier can change the case pattern, even when much of the meaning remains similar.

كان introduces a past state in this example: « كان الطالبُ مجتهدًا ». Its noun remains nominative and its predicate is accusative. The sentence means the student was diligent.

إنّ adds emphasis: « إنّ الطالبَ مجتهدٌ ». Here its noun is accusative and its predicate nominative. Learn the sentence roles, not only the order of the words, because expanded sentences may place elements differently.

Work through an example

Add إنّ to « الطالبُ حاضرٌ ».

Explanation: « إنّ الطالبَ حاضرٌ ». The noun of إنّ becomes accusative; its predicate remains nominative.

Watch out: كان and إنّ do not produce the same case pattern.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Complete « كان الطالبُ ___ ».

  1. مجتهدان
  2. مجتهدًا
  3. مجتهدٌ
  4. مجتهدٍ
Show answer and explanation

Answer B: مجتهدًا

The predicate of كان is accusative: مجتهدًا.

Question 2

Choose the correct sentence.

  1. إنّ الطالبُ حاضرًا
  2. إنّ الطالبِ حاضرٌ
  3. إنّ الطالبَ حاضرٌ
  4. إنّ الطالبَ حاضرٍ
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: إنّ الطالبَ حاضرٌ

إنّ takes an accusative noun and a nominative predicate in this basic pattern.

08 Grammar

الجذر والمشتقات: build related words

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Recognise a root shared by related words.
  • Distinguish an action, doer and receiver form.

Understand it

Many Arabic words are built from consonantal roots placed in patterns. The root ك ت ب connects words associated with writing. The root gives a family relationship; the pattern contributes grammatical or lexical meaning.

From كتب, كاتب is an active participle, a writer or one writing, while مكتوب is a passive participle, written. كتابة is a verbal noun naming the activity of writing. These forms are related but cannot be substituted without changing the sentence.

Derived verb patterns can change meaning, such as adding causative, intensive or reciprocal senses in appropriate verbs. They do not function as a mechanical dictionary: the meaning of an actual derived word must still be learnt and checked in context.

Work through an example

Classify « مكتوب » in relation to « كتب ».

Explanation: It is the passive participle, describing what has been written, rather than the person doing the writing.

Watch out: A shared root does not mean all words in its family have the same grammatical function.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Which word names a writer or one writing?

  1. كاتب
  2. كتابة
  3. مكتب
  4. مكتوب

Answer A: كاتب

كاتب is the active participle of كتب.

Question 2

Which consonants form the shared root in كتب، كاتب، مكتوب?

  1. م ك ت
  2. ك ا ب
  3. ا ت ب
  4. ك ت ب
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: ك ت ب

ك، ت، ب recur as the root consonants; the other letters belong to patterns or affixes.

09 Grammar

الفاعل والمفعول: roles and passive voice

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Identify a doer and direct object.
  • Recognise a simple passive transformation.

Understand it

In « كتبَ الطالبُ الدرسَ », the student is the doer (فاعل) and the lesson is the direct object (مفعول به). For these ordinary singular nouns, the doer is nominative and the direct object accusative.

In the passive, the doer is not expressed as the grammatical subject: « كُتِبَ الدرسُ », the lesson was written. The former object becomes نائب الفاعل and is nominative. The verb’s internal vowels also change.

Other accusative expressions can give additional information. « جاءَ الطالبُ مسرعًا » uses مسرعًا as a circumstance describing how the student came. A word is not necessarily a direct object simply because it has an accusative ending; identify its role.

Work through an example

Turn « كتبَ الطالبُ الدرسَ » into a passive without naming the doer.

Explanation: « كُتِبَ الدرسُ ». The verb becomes passive and الدرس becomes the nominative نائب الفاعل.

Watch out: Do not retain the old object’s accusative ending after it becomes نائب الفاعل.

  1. كَتَبَ الدرسَ
  2. كُتِبَ الدرسُ
  3. كُتُب الدرسِ
  4. كُتِبَ الدرسَ
Show answer and explanation

Answer B: كُتِبَ الدرسُ

The passive verb كُتِبَ is followed by nominative الدرسُ.

10 Grammar

العدد والشرط: quantities and conditions

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Apply basic one, two and three number patterns.
  • Recognise a conditional relation.

Understand it

With one and two, a numeral can follow the counted noun and agree in gender: كتابٌ واحدٌ and طالبةٌ واحدةٌ. The dual itself can express two, as in كتابان. Numbers require attention to the noun’s gender and grammatical context.

With cardinal numbers three to ten, the numeral normally has the opposite grammatical gender to the singular counted noun: ثلاثةُ كتبٍ, three books, but ثلاثُ طالباتٍ, three female students. The counted noun is plural genitive in this pattern. Larger numbers have additional rules.

A condition connects a requirement with a result. « إنْ تدرسْ تنجحْ » means if you study, you will succeed. In this basic construction إنْ governs jussive verbs in both parts. This is grammatical practice, not a promise that studying alone guarantees an examination result.

Work through an example

Complete “three books”: « ___ كتبٍ ».

Explanation: « ثلاثةُ كتبٍ ». كتاب is masculine, so the numeral three uses the feminine-marked form ثلاثة in the 3–10 pattern.

Watch out: Do not apply the 3–10 gender rule unchanged to every number up to 1,000.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Choose three female students.

  1. ثلاث طالبات
  2. ثلاثة طالبة
  3. ثلاثة طالبات
  4. ثلاث طالبان
Show answer and explanation

Answer A: ثلاث طالبات

The singular طالبة is feminine, so 3–10 takes the opposite-gender form ثلاث.

Question 2

In « إنْ تدرسْ تنجحْ », إنْ introduces…

  1. a past narrative
  2. possession
  3. a condition
  4. a vocative
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: a condition

The studying is presented as the condition connected to the result.

11 Translation and composition

الترجمة والإنشاء: clear Arabic messages

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Preserve meaning across Arabic and English.
  • Organise a short composition coherently.

Understand it

Translate the intended message before choosing word order. « عندي كتاب » naturally means I have a book, rather than the awkward literal rendering “at me a book”. Check pronouns, number, gender, time and negation in both languages.

A short composition needs a main idea and a logical sequence. On school, begin with the subject, add relevant activities and finish with a connected concluding thought. Use short correct sentences before attempting complicated structures.

Connectors improve cohesion: و adds an idea, لكن signals contrast and لأنّ introduces a reason. Do not insert a connector unless the intended relationship fits. Review the finished paragraph for subject agreement and clear references.

Work through an example

Translate « The teacher is in the classroom ».

Explanation: « المعلّمُ في الفصلِ ». The prepositional phrase gives the teacher’s location; Arabic does not require a separate present-tense is here.

Watch out: A word-for-word English order may produce unnatural or incorrect Arabic.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

What is the natural meaning of « عندي قلم »?

  1. You have a pen
  2. I am a pen
  3. The pen went
  4. I have a pen
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: I have a pen

عندي conveys possession by the speaker in this sentence.

Question 2

Which connector introduces a reason?

  1. أو
  2. ثم
  3. لكن
  4. لأنّ
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: لأنّ

لأنّ means because and gives the reason for a statement.

12 Arabic literature

الأدب: genre, imagery and historical context

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Distinguish poetry, prose and dramatic presentation.
  • Explain a literary image with evidence.

Understand it

Literary analysis asks what a work says and how it says it. Poetry can use rhythm, sound pattern and concentrated imagery; prose can develop narration or argument. A text’s period and setting help explain its concerns but do not replace close reading.

In Arabic rhetoric, التشبيه compares two things through a shared quality. In العلم كالنور, كـ is the explicit comparison marker. In العلم نور, both compared terms remain but the marker and shared quality are omitted: this is تشبيه بليغ. Distinguish it from استعارة, where a term is transferred through resemblance and one of the compared parties is not stated. In the invented classroom example رأيت أسدًا يخطب, the intended meaning is a brave speaker; يخطب supplies a clue that the lion is figurative. Explain the Arabic classification instead of treating every English use of metaphor as interchangeable with استعارة.

The IBASS file includes pre-Islamic, Islamic, modern and West African Arabic literature. It names particular writers and works, so students must study the specified selections. The modern-period starting date differs between the Arabic and English lines in the PDF (1798 versus 1978); this inconsistency must be resolved before teaching a dated chronology as settled.

Work through an example

Identify the device in the original expression « العلم كالنور ».

Explanation: It is a simile: knowledge is compared to light using كـ. Explain the suggested shared quality, clarity or guidance, rather than merely naming the device.

Watch out: An invented illustration is not a quotation from a prescribed poet.

2 practice questions with answers

Try each question before opening its answer. These are original CampusNinja practice questions.

Question 1

Which marker makes « العلم كالنور » an explicit comparison?

  1. م
  2. الـ
  3. ن
  4. كـ
Show answer and explanation

Answer D: كـ

كـ means like/as here and explicitly links the two things.

Question 2

ما نوع الصورة في «العلم نور» مع ذكر الطرفين وحذف الأداة ووجه الشبه؟

  1. طباق
  2. تشبيه مرسل مفصّل
  3. تشبيه بليغ
  4. استعارة تصريحية
Show answer and explanation

Answer C: تشبيه بليغ

العلم والنور هما الطرفان المذكوران، وحُذفت أداة التشبيه ووجه الشبه؛ لذلك فهو تشبيه بليغ. The example retains both compared terms, so distinguish it from استعارة.

13 Reading and application

في المكتبة: evidence, sequence and contrast

Read this lesson

What you should be able to do

  • Identify details and the sequence of events in the passage.
  • Use textual evidence to distinguish a supported inference from an invented detail.

Understand it

نصّ تدريبي أصلي: ذهب خالد إلى المكتبة بعد المدرسة. كان يريد كتابًا عن الزراعة، لكنه لم يجده. سألت الموظفة خالدًا عن موضوع البحث، ثم أعطته كتابًا آخر عن النباتات. جلس خالد ساعة وكتب ملاحظات في دفتره. لم يشتر الكتاب، بل استعاره ليعيده يوم الخميس.

The passage follows Khalid’s purpose, difficulty, alternative and borrowing decision. He first wants a book about agriculture, but receives another about plants. Read the change before selecting an answer.

لكن introduces contrast; ثم places one event after another. In لم يشتر الكتاب، بل استعاره, the second clause corrects the idea of buying: Khalid borrowed it. These connectors change how the statements fit together.

Track the pronouns through the named actions. The worker gives the book to Khalid; he writes notes in his own notebook. Thursday is the stated return day, not necessarily the day of the visit.

Work through an example

هل اشترى خالد الكتاب؟

Explanation: لا، لم يشتره؛ بل استعاره. The contrast explicitly distinguishes borrowing from buying.

Watch out: Use the supplied passage as evidence. A plausible detail is not necessarily a stated fact.
